A good old dose of nostalgia to remind us of the good times is just what consumers have been craving in the midst of a period of economic uncertainty. Just think about that in today’s media landscape and nostalgia has been everywhere over the last 12 months. After all, experiences of the past are what help form identities in the present. It's better for the internet and society at large if everybody isn't clustered around the same places all the time. The Nokia 3310, Britney Spears’ pink fluffy hair ties, Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ cassette playing through your Sony Walkman all of us can look back on a moment in time with fond memories that were defined by a new piece of tech, a fashion craze or a tune that defined a decade. ![]() The next generation of social media sites and video hosting platforms will be smaller and more numerous-at least initially-than the ones that rose up in the early-mid 2000's. Nowadays, people are terminally online to the extent that they build up their entire identities over social media profiles and delude themselves into believing they have a bunch of friends (hint: online friends are mostly nonexistent, if you think you have them, you probably don't.) As a final side note, (and I know this is an odd segway) one thing I am really enjoying about the more modern internet, in particular the last ~5 years, is the paradigm shift away from massively centralized social media. I suppose the advent of modern social media made this change inevitable, but one thing I did like about early 2000's internet was the more laid back atmosphere of it all-that isn't to say people didn't fight and hate each other, but it generally was a very low stakes situation, because everyone's IRL info and identities weren't so deeply inextricably linked with all of their online activities. Aside from it being larger and faster, there's more resources and different avenues for finding what you need, provided you're willing to look beyond the first 5 search results of stuff that's algoritmically pushed to the top. Although being smarter will also help.Įarly 2000's internet for me means phpBB boards, Newgrounds, eBaumsworld, Rinkworks, gimmicky Flash games with jump scares, early video hosting sites, and shock sites where maybe the most interesting thing was trying to decide which images were real and which were fake. Imagine my surprise then when I returned to Doomworld and found it a much kinder, gentler place in 2021. I was sort of around the alternate history forum world for a few years but due to shame over having not actually gone anywhere in life after high school, I left after a few years. If I spent my free time with anything, it was video games and I guess forum culture may have just bored me. ![]() There was this little thing called RL after all, and I wasn't so babied that I wanted to just hide from the world. Metal plates are made from cast iron, steel, or chrome, although cast iron and steel are the most popular. Some standard 10lb bumper plates bend when dropped if they’re on the bar by themselves, but you don’t have to worry about that with technique plates. Technique bumper plates have the same width as heavier bumper plates. They’re ideal for people who are new to the Olympic lifts or weightlifters who are rehabbing injuries and can’t lift a lot of weight. Technique bumper plates are only available in 5lbs or 10lbs. But if you’re a competitive weightlifter and want to train with plates that are more aligned to the IWF standards, you should stick with standard bumper plates or competition bumper plates. This isn’t a big deal for casual lifters. ![]() Most crumb bumper plates have a 445mm diameter. However, because crumb bumper plates bounce a lot, you’ll need to be careful of the rebound when you drop the bar so you don’t hurt yourself or damage other items in your gym space. This makes them a good option for home gyms if you’re lifting on a weak floor or you don’t want to disturb your family members or neighbors. They’re bouncier and less noisy than standard bumper plates. They have a matte finish and a rough texture.Ĭrumb bumpers have lower durometer measurements. They’re made from recycled rubber and are more durable than standard bumper plates. Crumb Bumper PlatesĬrumb bumper plates are also called MIL-spec or hi-temp bumper plates. They have more of a dead bounce than standard bumper plates, so they’re not ideal for the majority of lifters who train in their home gyms. Unless you’re an elite weightlifter, competition bumpers aren’t necessary. They’re also color-coded, which makes it easier to see how much weight is on the bar. They have to meet the exact specifications set by the IWF, including weight, collar size, and diameter. Competition Bumper PlatesĬompetition bumpers are certified by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF). They’ll rebound a little when dropped from overhead but won’t bounce so much that the bar will travel far away from you. Most standard bumper plates have durometer measurements of 80-90. They’re more durable now, but they often come with a higher price tag. In the past, urethane bumper plates were known to break easily. Some brands also sell bumper plates that are made out of urethane. They have a smooth, glossy finish and are usually available in solid black. Standard bumper plates, or training bumper plates, are made out of virgin rubber. A lower durometer score means more bounce while a higher score means less bounce.īumper plates come in four different variations: standard (or training) bumper plates, competition bumper plates, crumb bumper plates, and technique bumper plates. It measures the hardness of different materials. The bounciness of bumper plates is measured on a durometer scale, also called a shore scale. However, it’s important to note that any weight can damage a floor if you drop weights on it frequently or the floor isn’t strong enough. This makes them a good option for home gyms. They’re most often used by weightlifters and CrossFitters, who frequently drop the bar from overhead while doing movements such as snatches, clean and jerks, and overhead squats.īumper plates bounce when dropped, which helps protect not only the barbells from damage but your floors as well. When Undercover released its first album in 1982, it was described by some as “Christian punk,” characterized by high-energy anthems, rebellious themes, and short, three-chord songs. Undercover recorded at a warehouse and live at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. In early 1981 after many more concerts, both Undercover and The Lifesavors caught the attention of The Ministry Resource Center (MRC) and were invited to do custom albums. The concert was at a roller skating rink in Yorba Linda sometime late in 1980. Undercover started rehearsing in a greenhouse owned by Danny's parents.Īfter a couple of months of practice, Undercover had their first concert along with The Lifesavors (also their first concert) and another group, The Chosen Ones (which consisted of Chris Pavlis (Danny's brother) and Brian Doidge (who would later join The Lifesavors)). After auditioning a number of singers, Bill Walden answered the ad and he completed the lineup. The band decided they needed a real lead singer, so they put an ad in their church bulletin. ![]() Jim Nicolson, Joe Taylor, Danny Pavlis (drums), and Ric Alba (bass) started Undercover in about 1979 or 1980. Jerry became John's bassist for the Vineyard worship team, which lasted many years after that.” Early Years of Undercover Rose's bassist, Jerry Davis, had become a good friend of mine and I respected that. I would have muscled my way into a band with them sooner but J.C. “I had secretly idolized Taylor and Nicholson for their prog-rock abilities, as I was becoming a huge fan of Yes and Chris Squire at the time. Rose and Boaz became Undercover and The Lifesavors. This was the only Boaz song to outlive the big switcheroo of personnel when J.C. Then we got some local notoriety for going, (gasp) “New Wave” when I wrote the song, “Francine” in 1979. “Chris' dad being John Wimber, we found ourselves opening for Lonnie Frisbee a number of times. Ojo had a friend, Chris Wimber, with a band that needed a singer and keyboard player, so Ross and I joined up and there was Boaz. Frank and I had 'got saved' at a hippie bible study group at the home of Ross Mann, and we had a hippy folk trio with Ross that broke up when Frank joined J.C. I met them when my drummer-since-childhood Frank Pipitone auditioned and joined J.C. Ric Alba had this to say about the two bands: About 4-6 weeks after he joined, the band split up. They were eventually able to convinced Olsen to join on drums. As of 1979, Jim Nicholson and Joe Taylor were both in the band, and they had a tape that Olsen liked. Rose in the book God's Not Dead (And Neither Are We). Gary Olsen tells what he remembers of J.C. Chris Wimber and Ray Hersom formed The Lifesavors. Rose was also noted as having a demo tape, but it is unknown if Boaz ever recorded. ![]() Rose was Jim Nicolson, Joe Taylor, and Dave Hackbarth while Boaz was Chris Wimber, Danny Pavlis, Ray Hersom and Ric Alba (among a few others). Rose and Boaz had line-ups that were changing and intermixing. Chris Wimber was in Boaz before forming The Lifesavors. Jim Nicholson and Joe Taylor had been best friends since high school and were members of J.C. Boaz then decided to venture into punk and new wave and J.C. Thompson as “edgier than Larry Norman and Love Song.” According to Joey Taylor, Boaz was more rock and J.C. ![]() Undercover (and The Lifesavers) formed out of members that came from two earlier bands, J.C. The band changed members and names through the years, but one constant was Nicholson and Taylor. The first song they learned was “Highway Star” by Deep Purple. Taylor said yes and they had their first rehearsal in Nicholson's parents' living room in the summer of 1974. During the last week of their senior year in high school, Nicholson asked Taylor if he would be interested in playing keyboards in a band he was forming. He met Gym Nicholson in a mutual class, but really didn't get to interact with him much. Joey Taylor moved around a lot as kid, but by 9th grade he moved his last time to Fullerton, California. |
